While I like your premise that there are wise alternatives to contempt that we can use to disagree with people's ideas, there are some occasions when expressing contempt for a person's lack of character or nefarious motives is necessary.

The better question should be: can we minimize those extreme/polarized interactions, and reserve our contempt for the most egregious offenders?
