Why weren't universities taking these considerations more seriously PRIOR TO the U.S. Supreme Court decision overturning affirmative action?

If socioeconomic class, along with other intersectional factors, had been taken into account ALONGSIDE OF race, from the get-go -- it would have been a lot harder for the Court to justify ending race-based affirmative action.
