Yeah, I'm not sure how I felt about it (hearing it). In her case, I think it was just fortunately incidental that (assuming she was telling us the truth) she didn't lose her virginity until college -- and it wasn't followed by multiple partners.

I suspect, in that moment when she was contemplating whether or not to tell us, her self-reflection was that her path to losing her virginity had ended up being more preferable compared to young people who lose theirs before they finish high school. So, as you suggested, she took that as a teachable opportunity to remind us that it ISN'T abnormal to wait until college (or that age) -- and that, sometimes, your first time might indeed end up being with your lifelong companion.
