Yes, I know the clichés about rent-free baggage, etc. -- but, really, it's different for everyone.

For me, their abuse has to mean something. Otherwise, I wasted chunks of my life being nothing more than a victim. In most cases, I have no plausible way to confront them, in the present...so I have to resort to other coping mechanisms that focus on my present-day life.
