You do have a point when it comes to the literal act of demanding respect from someone else. I guess I'd counter that, in absence of extenuating circumstances, it's reasonable to expect complete strangers to act respectful toward one another when they haven't been given any legitimately-damning information from the individual about their behavior/mindsets.

What I'm pushing back against are the lopsided binaries, e.g. --

"White people owe BIPOC communities respect...but Black, Indigenous, and other People of Color don't owe White people anything!"

or

"Men owe women respect...but women don't owe men anything!"

But then, is that REALLY "respect?" Or is it more akin to coercion or extortion?
