Your reference to airport security especially resonated with me. Because I have a disability, I haven't flown in an airplane for nearly five years. TSA isn't exactly disability-friendly (although there are ways to circumvent it, if you know how)...that got me thinking a lot more deeply about your slippery slope argument.
I do think, ultimately, that the fact that we have access to Margaret Atwood's literature (and its TV adaptation) decreases the odds of it actually happening in our reality. I wonder, within the context of the fictional Gilead-centric "Atwoodverse," if THEIR characters even had prior access to their own iteration of Handmaiden-style fiction, hypothetically? Of course, as you emphasize, we must be continuously vigilant if we are to successfully protect ourselves from such an outcome.
